Since the early 2000s, the sharable content object reference model, also known as SCORM, has been integral for anyone involved in the online, computer-based training, distance-learning, or eLearning space. It has shaped how we design and create content online as it made it possible to share content easily across different learning platforms.

However, with the advent of new technologies and shifts in student behavior towards online learning, SCORM is starting to show its age.

Digital learning content designed with this model, which we’ll refer to in this post from now as ‘SCORM packages’, have often been created using Flash technology which is no longer supported by the publisher, Adobe Inc. What this means is that students will not be able to easily access content anymore on their devices. In fact, all major internet browsers as of December 2020 have stopped support in favor of more accessible technology (check out our blog post on the end of Flash for more information).

There are also potential concerns around the integrity of SCORM packages as they are not always technically secure. Content can also be relatively difficult to update due to requiring specialist knowledge and skills to edit and implement solutions.

What options do I have?

Whilst modern SCORM packages have improved on some of these issues, it’s still highly recommended to consider other supported options to ensure content remains accessible to students in Canvas. To name just a few:

1. H5P

H5P is an interactive online authoring tool available in Canvas. It allows you to easily design interactive content such as hotspots and drag-and-drop activities that can be published directly within your Canvas subject sites. For the more adventurous creators, you can even create interactive immersive videos, books, presentations, and much more. To learn more, check out the H5P collection on the LX site.

2. Kaltura

Kaltura is UTS’s central video streaming platform allowing you to easily upload, deploy and manage your videos. If you are using SCORM predominantly for multimedia purposes to present content and track views, Kaltura is an excellent alternative to share videos with your students in Canvas. Learn more about creating and managing videos using Kaltura on the LX site.

3. Canvas

Last but not least, we have Canvas. Canvas is our learning management system and it allows you to easily create learning modules using a mix of technologies such as H5P, Kaltura, and much more! You will also be able to easily integrate your Canvas assessments (quizzes and assignments) as part of your design so that students can keep on track! Check the building your Canvas course collection to get started.

Where can I get help?

If these options are not suitable or you require some additional assistance on best practices on how to redesign and improve your digital learning content, please contact the LX.Lab to book a consultation to discuss options.
