Mark your calendars for Thursday 3 October! The inaugural UTS Community Engaged Symposium is set to launch with a fresh and dynamic agenda focused on interrogating the how and why of community engagement. The symposium promises to deliver a day filled with enriching discussions, interactive workshops and insightful panel sessions. It has been designed to foster practical insights and strategies in working with community, promote networks and build capacity for engaged scholarship.
Interactive workshops
The symposium will feature workshops and panel sessions to offer insights into best practices for community engagement. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the sessions.
Indigenous Research: Community Led, Informed, and Actualised
Facilitated by the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, this workshop will focus on the principles and practices of Indigenous-led research.
Evaluation with Communities: Who Gets to Decide What “Good” Looks Like?
This interactive workshop will give participants a basic understanding of community-involved evaluation, ensuring that the impact measured is relevant to those who benefit from the work.
Breaking Down Barriers Between Academia and Community
This session will equip researchers with the knowledge and skills to work meaningfully with communities, focusing on navigating power dynamics, co-design and knowledge exchange.
Getting to the heart of Community Engagement
The UTS Engaged Symposium delves deep into the essence of community engagement with two pivotal panels. Asking the burning questions many researchers and practitioners shy away from, our panellists aim to go right to the heart of community engagement.
Engaged Teaching and Learning at UTS
Explore fit-for-purpose approaches to community engagement through teaching and learning. The panellists will discuss the impact of these initiatives on both the university and the communities involved.
From extraction to reciprocity: building authentic university and community partnerships
In this session, our panellists will share common pitfalls, how to shift from extractive to reciprocal relationships, and how to maintain a community-centred approach in all aspects of your research and projects.
Networking, Dinner and Exhibition
The symposium will conclude with networking refreshments, dinner and an exhibition showcasing community-engaged practices from various UTS faculties. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and explore collaborative opportunities.
