Commons is a digital library full of educational content that you can access through Canvas. You can browse through content and import material into your Canvas courses, or share content from your own Canvas course into Commons for others to use.
Commons can be accessed by UTS staff (Commons is not available to students) by logging into Canvas and choosing the Commons link from the Global Navigation menu.
Commons can be used to share the following content:
These can then be imported as they were shared, i.e. users cannot import parts of a Module or individual components of a course. Any due dates set for Assignments or Quizzes are reset once the resource is imported into a Canvas course.
More information can be found through the following Canvas Guide:

Commons has search filter to help find what you are looking for. Search results can be filtered by keywords, author name or type of resource.’Only UTS approved resources’ is an additional feature available for UTS staff. Use this filter to display curated content from the UTS Library and Careers in your search results.
Authors can choose to update the content they have shared in Commons. Updates to imported content are not automatic and you can opt to update the resource or keep the version they imported originally. If you have imported content from Commons, you will be notified of new updates in the Commons menu bar under Updates.
If you choose to update the originally imported resource, any changes you made to the original version of the resource will be removed (i.e. the update will refresh the imported resource to the updated version that the author makes available). If you would like to keep your updates, import a new version or don’t accept the updates.

When sharing content to Commons, a license type must be selected from the licence options.
This license allows the user to share the course content they create on your their terms. Content creators determine how and to what extent other users can reuse their original course content. Likewise, they can reuse other users’ content if it has a Creative Commons license.
All CC licenses require that others who use others work in any way must give credit as per the users request (not endorsement). If users want to use work shared by others without giving credit or for endorsement purposes, permission must be obtained from the author of the content.
Creator allows others to copy, distribute, display, perform, and (unless chosen NoDerivatives) modify and use the authors work for any purpose other than commercially. Use of content for commercial purposes requires the permission of the author.
Choosing this license means others can copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify the creators work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms, unless permission is received by the author to allow sharing using alternative terms.
This licence allows others to copy, distribute, display and perform only original copies of the authors work. If they want to modify the original work by the author, they must get their permission first.
As an author you can update, change or removed your content. This is done by following the same steps as sharing to Commons but selecting the Update Option. If this option is not selected, there will be a new copy of the resource created. It is recommended that if updates and changes are made to previously shared content in Commons, the version notes be used to inform the users of the updates.
