Due to bandwidth and access limitations overseas, some students are still having issues with our streaming service Kaltura. If you have audio or video files, we recommend checking the viability of streaming via Kaltura as a first step, making files available to download as a back-up solution and emailing files as a last resort.
Your first step is to make the file available within Canvas or UTS Online/Blackboard via the Browse & Embed feature of Kaltura (instructions).
If you’re doing it yourself, you’ll need to upload the file yourself (instructions). If you’ve given it to us for processing, we’ll have uploaded it for you and it will appear in your MyMedia.
After you’ve released content via streaming, check in with your students to see if anyone is having difficulties, or you can go ahead and prepare offline file downloads in advance.
If you need to make your videos available offline, we recommend using the Canvas Course Files feature (instructions). You’ll need to upload your audio/video files to Files, and make the Files section visible to students (it’s hidden by default).
We recommend limiting file sizes to <100mb each to ease student downloading. If you need help making your file sizes smaller, the LX.lab Media Team can do it for you during COVID-19 (about and contact), or you can DIY with VLC/Handbrake software.
Canvas Course Sites have a default file size limit of 2GB total, so if you are going to exceed that you will need to lodge a ServiceConnect ticket (direct link). Under “Is your request related to” select “Something not listed here”, and be sure to include a reference to the “Canvas Course file size limit” in your request.
It’s best to avoid the ‘Record/Upload’ feature from the Rich Content Editor – it allows for streaming, not downloading.
In the most extreme case, if students can’t log in to Canvas or Microsoft Teams, or are having major problems downloading files from there, you will need to send them via emails. Since email. Since email has a size limit of 20mb, and this covers about 1 heavily compressed 10 minute video, you’ll likely need to send your compressed video files over multiple emails. We recommend sending your video files separately from any zipped up Canvas content (see ‘back-up plans’).
Again, if you need help making your files sizes smaller, the LX.lab Media Team can do it for you during COVID-19 (about & contact), or you can DIY with VLC/Handbrake software.
If you are using Microsoft Teams to keep in contact with your isolated students, you can share files directly there (instructions).
