This page describes a simple design model that can be used to run a subject fully online including lectures and tutorials using Zoom.
This model is suitable for:
- Fully online subject
- Online lectures and tutorials
- Any cohort size
- Subject with heavy theoretical contents
Case study
The subject coordinator of 54052 Economy, Society and Globalism from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) needed to convert his subject into a fully online mode. He had never taught in an online mode and was not familiar with setting up web conferencing tools. His subject is usually delivered in 12 weeks over one academic semester. On a typical week, students attend a 1-hour lecture and 2-hour tutorial as follows:
- In a lecture, students are required to do the pre-reading before they come to the lecture and the subject coordinator delivers a 1-hour lecture to 150 students.
- For tutorials, students are required to do the pre-reading and attend the tutorial to answer questions in groups.
Structure
Lectures and tutorials will need to be offered online for students via Zoom. For the case study above, the subject coordinator will pre-record lectures and embed them into the LMS. Tutorials will run in live Zoom sessions as each tutor will run one tutorial group (30 students).
For pre-recorded lectures you can do one of the following:
- Prepare a PowerPoint presentation with the topic of the week.
- Run Zoom and use the Share screen feature to show slides as you talk through the lecture.
- Improve engagement by asking questions to help students to think critically as you talk.
- Provide students the opportunity to reflect on the lecture in a discussion board (or comment box in Canvas).
Activities that can support the online delivery of a tutorial include:
- Create Breakout Rooms, where you add students into smaller groups during the online session and ask them to answer a question.
- Students can complete the task and document their work via a Google doc. At the end of the breakout rooms, bring students back to the main room and ask them to share their findings with the larger group (using share screen option).
- Add Polls during the online session to get students opinions on some critical questions.
- Utilise the Chat function in Zoom for back-channeling. (Please see how to set up this activity in this resource link.)
- Provide students with enough instructions on how to use and engage with the online session as this may be new to them.
- Test the setting with your teaching team before running the actual session and please make sure the process is consistent across all instructors involved in delivery.
