Screen shots and video help to illustrate processes and activities so that the reader can more easily visualise and engage with the resource content. Many resources include screenshots of learning content or short videos illustrating a concept in more detail. This may be created by UTS or drawn from external sources such as Canvas.
Once the headings and content for your resource are drafted, you may have images or video ready to insert. If you still need to create your videos, take a look at the Collection on Creating and managing videos for a comprehensive guide.
Search and select ‘Image’ from the available blocks:
You can then upload the image you would like to insert from your files by clicking ‘Upload’:
If you have drafted your resource and included images in Word or a google document, save time by copying and pasting the contents into your resource page draft. The images will come through and automatically become an image block in the page.
Once the image is uploaded, you shouldn’t need to alter any of the image dimensions, size or other settings. At this point, it’s a good idea to add ‘alt text’ on the right, which means the image can be correctly interpreted by a screen reader.
You can also add a caption below if you want to provide a source for an image which you did not create yourself. Otherwise, leave the ‘Write caption…’ area blank.
If you annotate the image to guide the reader through a sequence of instructions, use a dark red box to highlight an area or item, and a numbered circle to show the sequence.
Search and select either Youtube or Vimeo blocks, depending on where your video is hosted. If you have created your own video, you can get in touch with the LX.lab Media Team for advice on how and where to host it.
Follow the prompts to paste a link to the video you want to share, click ‘Embed’ and WordPress does the rest for you, including formatting the video to the right width and size on the page.
The video will embed like the example here below, so the reader is able to view it without leave the resource page.
Introduce the video with a brief description, so the reader knows what it covers. You can let them know how long it is, and link to a transcript (if available) after the video.
Images used in resources are usually screen shots, inserted to help the reader easily visualise an activity or process being described. Images or diagrams are occasionally drawn from other sources to illustrate a point or process; if so, they should be referenced in the caption underneath the image.
Videos are used in different ways to enhance resources, including:
