Menus and headings help the reader to navigate a resource more easily, especially for longer and more complex resources. The menu lets readers know the main content of the resource, and the headings provide structure and signposting.
Once you know what the main headings in the resource should be, you’re ready to set up the structure and menu. If you’re not sure what the structure should be, take a minute to write it out in note form before you start.
Search and select ‘Anchor menu’ from the available blocks:
A menu icon and heading ‘On this page’ are generated automatically. On the right hand side you can then edit in ‘Menu label’ (your heading title) and give it a corresponding ‘Menu ID’ (anchor). Use the ‘Add Row’ button to add as many menu labels as you need, based on the number of headings you have in your resource.
The menu ID should be in lowercase characters, with no spaces between words. The ID does not have to be as long as the menu label/heading title, and you can connect words with a hyphen or underscore (how_to_use).
Now you’re ready to connect each menu label and ID with a matching heading throughout the resource. To do this, search and select ‘Anchored h2 heading’ from the available blocks:
Editing on the right hand side, you can insert your ‘Heading’ and ‘Section ID’. These should be the same as each menu label and menu ID in the anchor menu you created above.
The ‘Section ID’ must be an exact match for the ‘Menu ID’ in the Anchor menu block above (e.g. how_to). If they don’t match, the menu doesn’t link to the corresponding heading, and nothing will happen when the reader clicks on it.
Avoid blank spaces at the beginning or end of a heading or menu ID – they can stop the ‘anchor’ working too!
Repeat the process above to add all the headings for the resource, and match up the section and menu IDs. If you know what all your headings should be, it’s quicker and easier to get all this done before you edit your main resource content.
The majority of resources have a menu which is ‘anchored’ to a number of headings, to help the reader easily navigate the contents and see the overall structure and flow.
If your resource is very short or only has a few headings, you could leave out the menu and use standard ‘H2 headings’ instead. If you want to add an anchor menu later, you can still connect these headings by adding ‘HTML anchor’ in the Advanced settings on the right hand side.
