Hot Topic Theme: Student Agency and Teamwork

Are you looking for different ways of introducing students to teamwork? Preparing students for teamwork is time well invested because teamwork is a social activity that does not happen automatically. One strategy for teamwork preparation is using short films to trigger self-reflection and collective action. Films can be used as a case study analysis. They are a great medium that is non-threatening, creative and fun. In this workshop we will generate ideas together on how to use them as a preparation resource to strengthen student agency and the capacity for doing teamwork.

Participants will learn to use short films as a:

  • Preparation tool for team building
  • Safe medium for students to practise critiquing teamwork scenarios
  • Strategy to stimulate self-reflection, empathy and team agency
  • Pre-teamwork assessment task.

What are Hot Topics?

Hot Topics are curriculum and teaching themes that have emerged in UTS from student learning experiences, student feedback surveys (SFS), consultations and other strategic projects. They are a series of professional development and engagement opportunities to enhance courses and provide longer-term support through community building and sustained critical dialogues.

This event is facilitated by the Institute for Interactive Media and Learning (IML), Teaching and Curriculum (TAC) Team.

Franziska Trede is an Associate Professor in Higher Education and Professional Practice in the IML. She leads the TAC Team and coordinates the IML Research Program and the UTS wide Course Directors Network.
Dimity Wehr is a Curriculum Development Officer in the IML. As a TAC Team member, she coordinates curriculum design advice and development, and event facilitation in the blended learning environment.

You’ll be added into the ‘Hot Topics’ MS Teams space upon registration. You’ll be able to stay connected, view shared resources, favourite papers, blogs and website links. You can leave the MS team space at anytime or email IML_Ops@uts.edu.au to opt out.
