Experiential legal education integrates theory and practice by combining academic inquiry with actual legal experience (Stuckey 2007, 165). This can take a variety of forms but must involve students engaging in practical projects where they gain experience through performing legal tasks accompanied by feedback and reflection to deepen their capacities to improve and self-assess. This form of learning builds professionalism, growth and maturity and helps students to appreciate the value of their academic learning and understand its application in the ‘real world’. This seminar will consider some of the pedagogical motivations behind experiential education and discuss examples being used in the Faculty. It will also provide an opportunity for participants to explore ideas for new forms of experiential education that can be developed within subjects and as stand-alone subjects.
