Restrict View Quantitative Data is a new feature in Canvas that provides a grade only in both rubrics and overall marks (e.g., H, D, C, P, and F). Numerical marks will be hidden from students.
This feature is currently only switched on for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building (DAB). It’s also only available in Canvas 1 (not Canvas 2).
This feature alleviates a manual workaround for subjects using grades without marks, which currently involves creating two assignments, including a ‘Results processing’ assignment. It’s also in alignment with the CASS grading schema and as a pedagogical practice.
How do I restrict the viewing of quantitative data in a course? – Instructure
Enable the feature in Course Settings by going to Course Navigation, then clicking Settings – Course Details.
Finally, go to the bottom of the page and click ‘Update course details.
Now students will only be able to see letter grades in their Grades. You can still grade using numbers, but the numbers will be hidden from students. When the quantitative data restriction setting is enabled, Admins, Instructors, and TAs can still see quantitative data.
For more information about view and manage grading schemes in a subject, please refer to the Canvas guide.
After enabling the feature, you can choose to enter grade as points, percentage and Grading scheme in Gradebook. When entering grades using the grading scheme, you can enter a letter grade for marks. The actual numerical mark will be the highest mark possible minus 1 under the letter grade (e.g., if you choose ‘D’, it will mark the student as 83.5).
You can still enter marks as number in SpeedGrader, which will then be transformed into a Letter Grade automatically.
You can assess students using a rubric. You can either select ratings on the rubric or input a point value for each criterion. Upon clicking ‘save’, it will generate a letter grade outcome.
In some cases, you may want to assign an individual assignment a different grading scheme than the default one (e.g., pass/fail). You still have the flexibility to do this – it can be configured within the assignment setup page and will overwrite the default grading scheme in settings. For more information, refer to this guide: How do I add a grading scheme to an assignment?
You can export assignment data from the Gradebook. The exported results will be shown as numeric marks in the spreadsheet – at the right end of the column, you will find the Letter Grade final results displayed.
Quizzes will show students letter grades on the Grade page. However, students can still see the exact number mark within their own assignment page. Usually, the right answer and feedback will be revealed after the quiz, so it’s okay to have the mark displayed.
