Comments Box in Canvas

A poll can be embedded anywhere Canvas supports the Rich Content Editor. While editing content:

1. Select Apps in the Rich Content Editor (the plug icon)
2. If the Comments Box is one of your most frequently used tools in Canvas, it will appear in the shortcut menu in the Apps list. If not, select ‘View All’, type ‘Social Poll’ in the search bar and select ‘Comments box’ from the results.
3. Enter a question prompt
4. Select the settings (find out how to configure in the next section)
5. Select the Save button

A Comments Box will be embedded in the content area.

In addition to embedding a basic discussion, you can configure other settings, which will be displayed beneath the discussion prompt box.

Show names of respondents

When this option is selected, you will be able to see the names next to each comment. If this is not select, posts will be anonymous. This option can not be changed once posts have been made.

Allow threaded replies

When this option is selected, it allows the teaching staff and students to reply to others’ discussion posts. 

Users must post before seeing replies

When this option is selected, it blocks all discussion replies until the student writes and submits their own reply to the prompt. Use this option if you would like students to form their own opinion and response before being influenced by other students.

Allow Likes

When this option is selected a user can like other users’ posts. Selecting this option triggers more options: 

• Only graders are allowed to like – when this option is selected, only users with grading credentials are allowed to like comments
• Sort by likes – when this option is selected, the posts are sorted by which post has the most likes

Edit a Comments Box by clicking on the pencil at the top right of the poll – this will take you back to edit the question and settings.

After a Comments Box has been embedded, students can view the embedded discussion in a Canvas and participate by commenting, replying, or liking other comments. If a comment is inappropriate, Subject Coordinators are able to remove it by selecting the three dots to the right of the comment and selecting ‘delete’.
