Mentimeter is a great addition to your classroom activities regardless of whether you are face-to-face or remote, and it can be used with a range of different tools. Below we look at how to use Mentimeter in Canvas, Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
Canvas
Is Mentimeter integrated with Canvas?
Mentimeter isn’t integrated with Canvas. However, you can use features available in Canvas to make asynchronous activities using Mentimeter easy and engaging.
One way you could use Mentiemeter in Canvas is to share a link to a poll in your subject site so that students can access it easily and won’t have any trouble inputting the correct code for the activity. You could also embed Mentimeter into a Canvas page using the iframe HTML code by following the steps below.
Embed a Mentimeter presentation in a Canvas page
- Open the Mentimeter presentation and click ‘Share’
- Click ‘Presentation Sharing’ and then ‘Embed live results’
- Go to Canvas and open the page you want to add the poll to and click Edit. Select the ‘</>’ icon to open the HTML editor
Paste the embed live results code from Mentimeter and then click ‘Save’. Your presentation should then appear on the Canvas page along with the live results. If you want to make it an asynchronous activity for students, set the type of Menti to ‘Survey’ mode and do not hide the instructions bar on the slides. Students will be able to participate at any time unless you turn off the voting for the presentation.
Share a voting link to your presentation
An alternative method is to share a voting link on Canvas so students can go directly to the poll to submit their responses. In your Mentimeter presentation, click ‘Share’ and you will be able to share a link or download a QR code which can then be inserted into Canvas. This can ideally be used in an asynchronous lecture or if you need pre-work to be completed by your students. Just make sure your presentation is set to ‘Survey’ mode.
Unique response collection
If your Menti is set to ‘Survey’ mode, you can restrict participants to only vote once from their device. This does not prevent students from responding multiple times with different devices or different browsers and Canvas will not recognise the student as a previous participant.
Zoom or Microsoft Teams
If you’re in an online meeting it is easy to share your Mentimeter poll with your students.
Sharing your screen in Zoom
- Open the Mentimeter presentation in your web browser. In your Zoom meeting click ‘Share screen’
- Choose the Mentimeter window and then Share to show the screen to your audience
- In the Mentimeter window click Present to start your Mentimeter poll
Sharing your screen in Microsoft Teams
- In your meeting select ‘Share content’ and choose if you want to share your computer audio
- Select the Mentimeter window
- Click Present on your Mentimeter slides to begin the presentation
