Support ‘at risk’ students, send submission reminders and increase personalised feedback touchpoint with the ‘Message students who’ function in Canvas.
The “Message students who” function tied to Canvas assignments allows you to support your students by sending them messages which are tied to particular behaviours.
In the message students who panel you can send a message to students who:
These targeted behaviour responses can be used to provide support in a selection of different scenarios.
Depending on the nature of the assignment, it can be useful to send a targeted message to those who are yet to do it.
You may find this useful to get traction for smaller scale tasks that students might overlook – for example a pre-class learning quiz. A personal reminder sent in this way might help to note its importance and make sure that tutorials have the opportunity to flow on from work already done.
Such an action is also an easy way to provide personalised support and create an additional point of contact in your feedback ecosystem so that students know you are interested in their involvement.
If you are interested in discussing an idea around this function or would like assistance in setting up messaging for your subject, reach out to the LX.Lab for a consultation.
By looking at the students who have not submitted a particular assignment after the due date, you can get a view of, and an opportunity to reach out to, students who might need some additional support.
As this is a feature that can be used in conjunction with anything that exists as an assignment within Canvas, you might like to consider how you could use this function in connection with other check-ins, either that already exist or that you set up to work with it. Quizzes as nongraded or formative assignments provide a platform for students to check their knowledge and for you to respond with a message based on how they go (or whether they participated). While Canvas quizzes provides the opportunity for feedback for individual answers, students likely appreciate just having one or two actionable suggestions tied to their overall score bracket (rather than a host of actionables, each tied to individual quiz question feedback).
