Students Explain: Language
Ensuring that you use clear language in your subject is important for all students – and critical for some who might find it harder to fill in the gaps.
We asked our Digital Accessibility Ambassadors – UTS students with lived experience of disability about why using clear language in your subject is important to them.
Tips for using accessible language
- Introduce new discipline-specific words into your subject.
- Write out all acronyms in full the first time they are used on a Canvas page.
- Aim for short and simple sentences and paragraphs.
- Use bullet points for lists.
- Use plain English for instructions.
- Avoid culture-specific slang, idioms, and colloquialisms.
- Provide reasons and context for what to look out for in learning materials.
- Be consistent with naming conventions.
- Avoid words from other languages (e.g., use “genuine,” not “bona fide”).
