A transcript is a document that contains the full text of either a video or audio file. Here’s how you can make your video transcripts easily available for students in Canvas.
To learn more about creating and using captions, read LX Captions and transcripts: accessible practice.
To find a transcript from Kaltura:
To download a transcript from Kaltura
The transcript generated by Kaltura will be based exactly on the captions attached to the video. So for a more accurate transcript, it is a good idea to edit your captions first.
Use your best judgement to determine how much work needs to be done on a transcript to make it meaningful for anyone who needs it.
Remember to save your work as you go. You can upload your file to UTS Onedrive to ensure it auto-saves.
Once your transcript is complete, you’re ready to share it with your students on Canvas.
The Standard method is to upload the saved file directly to Canvas. Read our guide on the LX site to Upload and embed documents.
You can also share a link to the transcript.
To share your transcript by a link, ensure your file is saved to your UTS OneDrive and created in an online MS Word document.
This method is limited because you will need to upload the file again if any changes are made to it. Likewise, only the person who owns the file can share a link to it. This limits others in your teaching team from editing the transcript. For a more sustainable method of sharing the transcript, read the following Advanced method.
The advanced way to share a transcript in Canvas is by using the HTML code for the ‘details widget’.
This allows readers to toggle the transcript on and off, as in the following example.
Copy the code below for a details widget/toggle:
<details>
<summary style="cursor: pointer;">Video transcript</summary>
<p>Enter or paste transcript text etc.</p>
</details>
Paste this HTML code into the space below your video in the Canvas.
First you need to access the HTML Editor (1). This can only be accessed when you are in ‘Edit’ mode on a page.
Paste the code for the ‘details widget’ in the space after your Kaltura video. The Kaltura video code ends with:
</iframe></p>
After pasting the code, select the HTML editor icon again (< / >). This reverts to the visual editor mode.
Locate your Word document with your edited transcript. Copy and paste your edited transcript text where it states ‘Enter or paste transcript text‘ beneath the details widget.
Select Save to save your work.
Now anyone with edit access to your Canvas page can improve or adjust the transcript when required.
