Discussion forums can be wonderful spaces for learning but need to be well managed to avoid any potential issues or conflicts. Students should clearly understand what the discussions are designed to achieve and what content and style or format is sought in posts. Make sure you establish the rules of engagement and best practices up front, and set good examples by actively participating.
Highlight how students should:
- Listen to others
- Be respectful of different points of view
- Understand what others are saying, being charitable and diplomatic as required
- Be inclusive
- Be relevant
- Be clear
- Be brief
- Be polite
Tips
- Establish rules of engagement and netiquette
- Encourage students to ask non-personal questions to build the community
- Motivate students to participate and answer each other’s questions, make comments, participate, contribute, etc.
- Monitor activity regularly, and respond swiftly to bad behaviour or language
- Share additional online resources through discussion posts
- Post questions and challenges to provoke healthy debate
- Set notifications so you know when students make new comments and can respond quickly
