A session schedule is an effective way to define expectations to students and provide a clear guide to the session. Use session schedule page templates in your Canvas site and tailor them to fit your subject.
Your faculty has a Canvas site that contains several template libraries for pages, modules and page elements, including templates for session schedules. The templates are structured at two levels:
If you do not have access to your Faculty template Canvas course, please log a ticket in ServiceConnect. Select Canvas > Other and in the description, request ‘faculty template Canvas site access’.
Instructions to copy a page from one Canvas course to another are on the Copying and sharing content in Canvas resource page.
These templates give an overview of the entire subject session at once. This is useful for subjects in a weekly structure and can outline delivery mode (i.e. on campus or online), weekly topics, and assessments. The headings can be customised.
To make the session schedule more sustainable over time and quicker to update, add assessment due weeks (e.g. due in Week 3) rather than specific dates.
In your faculty template Canvas course, look for the page templates ‘Detailed subject schedule’, ‘Detailed subject schedule – Current Semester’, and ‘High level subject schedule’. Choose the one that suits your subject. We recommend subject coordinators copy the template page into their Canvas course, adding it between the ‘How to be successful in this subject’ and ‘Subject resources’ pages in the ‘Get Started’ module.
To provide more granular detail for a module, consider using the templates ‘1 week module overview with pacing schedule’ or ‘4 week module overview with pacing schedule’.
The module overview page provides module objectives, essential learning activities, an overview of any synchronous activities, and assessment links. This module overview is particularly useful for first year subjects needing more explicit guidance, or an online week with limited guidance.
