View, enter and manage marks for students in the Canvas Gradebook.
Only marked assignments, marked discussions, marked quizzes, and marked surveys that have been published are included in the Gradebook. If an assignment is not visible in the Gradebook, check that it is Published.
In the Gradebook, you can choose to view all students at once or one student at a time. The default view in the Gradebook is all students at once. You can sort and display student names in the Student Name column and view individual students via the Individual View.
You can view marks as points, percentages, complete or incomplete, or letter grade.
You can:
To access the Gradebook for your Canvas course site, click on the Grades link in your Course Navigation Menu.
The top of the Gradebook includes global sorting options and settings you can use to organise your Gradebook [1], which will populate the selected student data [2] and assignment data [3].
These Canvas guides introduce you to the layout and features of the Gradebook in more detail:
The visibility of marks to students is managed via the grade posting policy feature. There are two grade posting policies, which can be applied at the Canvas course (subject) level or per assignment:
Filtering lets you identify a group of students and their marks quickly without the distraction of other students in the Gradebook list. For example, you could use this to identify students from one class that have yet to have their assignments marked.
It’s possible to apply multiple conditions to a single named filter, which can quickly be switched on and off.
Conditions include filtering by:
To create filters, first find the ‘Gradebook Filters’:
Once in the ‘Filters’ pop-up window, create a filter from the drop-down menu. Select specific filters based on: Sections, Assignment Groups, Student Groups, Status, Submissions, Start & End Date.
Use the ‘Apply filter’ switch to turn on and off a filter whenever you want to use it.
The ‘Create and Manage Filter Presets’ tab on the pop-up sits above ‘Filters’ – this allows you to create and name a custom filter that can be saved as a preset.
A new ‘View options’ feature can be accessed by clicking on the right-hand-side cog symbol. This gives to the ability to show/hide: Notes, Unpublished Assignments, Hide Assignment Group Totals, Hide Total and Override Columns. Select ‘Apply Settings’ at the bottom of the page to save.
The default grade posting policy at UTS is the manual grade posting policy. This means that results are hidden from students until you are ready to post them.
To post marks, there must be at least one mark available.
Once you have marks available for an assignment, you can choose to:
Students receive a notification each time marks are posted.
This will post all currently entered marks, but require future marks (e.g. for late submissions) to be manually posted again.
This will post all currently entered marks, and automatically make visible any future results as soon as they’re entered (e.g. for late submissions).
For more advanced options, have a look at the Canvas guides on selecting a grade posting policy and how to hide marks that were previously posted.
