Students can apply for automated 72-hour extensions to assessment due dates through the Assignment Extensions area in Canvas.
To ensure automated short extensions are enabled for your assignments, make sure all graded assignments and graded discussions have a set due date in Canvas.
Automated short extensions are not available for:
If you’re unsure about when to enable or disable automated short extensions for a Canvas assignment, please book a consultation with the LDT team.
Automated short extensions are managed in the Assignment Extensions dashboard (also called EzExtend). Instructors can access this dashboard in the Assignment Extensions area of a Canvas subject site.
The dashboard shows a list of applicable assignments with short extension requests.
To view details on which students have been granted short extensions, select the assignment title and open the Granted tab. Requests are approved automatically, meaning that the Pending and Not Granted tabs are redundant and will remain empty.
Note:
Students can request a short extension through the Assignment Extensions dashboard from 14 days before an assignment is due. The ability to request a short extension will close immediately after the due date.
Once submitted, a short extension request is approved automatically and the student’s new due date will be updated in Canvas. Students will also receive an email to their UTS email address confirming their new due date.
Subject coordinators and tutors do not need to do anything to confirm the request. Students do not need to supply a reason to request an automated short extension.
If students require a short extension for a Canvas group assignment, group members must discuss and agree unanimously on a short extension request before applying. The student who submits the group assignment must also request the short extension and inform the Subject Coordinator by email.
Students seeking longer extensions will still need to submit their requests either through special consideration processes or (for registered students) Accessibility Services.
