Learn about the Kaltura Media Gallery, how to enable it in Canvas and the process for adding channel playlists.
The Media Gallery is a library of videos that you can access from your Canvas subject. Once enabled, it is visible to all instructors and students in the subject.
We still recommended embedding Kaltura media to Canvas pages so it can be contextualised and organised under a module. This technique also allows you to arrange activities around your videos.
In contrast, the Media Gallery provides a quick way for instructors to share media with students in bulk. The downside is your videos may lack the intended teaching context.
Having channel playlists can help to organise the Media Gallery and provide a kind of structure. You can also embed a channel playlist in context on a Canvas page. This then allows you to frame and activate the playlist videos.
Go to Media Gallery, click on the icon on the top right corner, and select ‘Create channel playlist’ to create a new playlist.
Once you’ve created a playlist, it will take you to a space where you can add items to your playlist from your My Media or from the Media Gallery. Search for the media to be added, then click on the + button to add it to the playlist.
Click on ‘Go to Media Gallery’ to go back to the Media Gallery. The Media Gallery ‘Home’ will now show the playlists and its videos instead of all the videos in one place. To see all videos, including videos not in a playlist, click on the ‘…Media’ tab next to the Home tab at the top.
Go to Media Gallery, then click on the icon on the top right corner to ‘Edit’ the Media Gallery. Select the ‘Playlist’ (1) tab next to ‘Details’. Select the HTML Embed icon (2).
You can then make decisions about the type of player you want to embed. You have a choice of a Vertical player or Horizontal player (1). Accordingly, you can select the maximum size of the player (2). Copy the Embed code (3) and select ‘Done’ (4).
You can then go to a page in Canvas and embed that code.
