Students can share videos on Discussions and Groups in Canvas, as well as other tools.
One of the easiest ways for students to share their own videos is via Canvas Discussions. If a Discussion has been set up for a Canvas subject, students can embed a video from their Kaltura My Media collection in the reply in the same way you would add media to a Canvas page via browse and embed. They can also embed a video from another site with an iframe code such as Microsoft Stream, Youtube, or Vimeo.
Access Canvas Commons to share a step-by-step guide with students on ‘How To Add a Video to a Canvas Discussion’.
If Groups in Canvas have been set up for students, the student group will be able to have their own Group Homepage for collaboration. In this Group Homepage, students will be able to share content with each other by creating Pages and embedding videos, or provide an external link to the video. Students can also start their own Discussion within the group homepage and share videos that way.
Students may be required to share a video of an interview they are conducting for a certain assessment task or a research project. In these cases it’s important for students to consider the need for a signed consent form before they share videos of such interviews.
UTS has its own Video Consent Form.pdf (uts.edu.au) that you may want to adapt for student use. You may prefer to use a Creative Commons release form. A more detailed ‘Conditions of Use’ form can be found on the Oral History NSW Guidelines website.
Students are free to share videos to each other via email, and in Teams chats or channels if the subject has a Microsoft Teams site set up. In Teams, students can simply paste the link to the video to share it with their colleagues. They may have to adjust the sharing permissions to allow others to access the video.
All UTS staff and students have access to Microsoft Stream, another video sharing platform that is closely integrated with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and other Office365 apps. Students can upload videos to Microsoft Stream and adjust the Permissions to ‘Allow everyone in your company [UTS] to view this video’ or to share with certain people only. After clicking on ‘Share’, the student can Copy the direct link to the video and share that link with others. Clicking on the ‘Embed’ tab will give the embed code for students to copy and paste into the HTML editor of any Canvas page with a Rich Content Editor to embed the playlist, such as in Discussions, Quizzes, any Group Announcements and Pages, and more.
