Publish your videos in the video portal Kaltura MediaSpace – you can also create channels and playlists.
Kaltura MediaSpace is the video portal where you can create, upload, and share media content, create playlists and channels, and browse and search for videos to watch. You can access the Kaltura MediaSpace by going to kaltura.uts.edu.au.
My Media is your own personal media storage, where you can create or upload media content. To go to ‘My Media’, click on your name on the top right corner and select ‘My Media’ from the User drop-down menu; alternatively, you can access My Media in Canvas directly. Clicking on the thumbnail or title of the media entry takes you to the Media Entry page to manage and edit your media files and view analytics.
By default, media uploaded to MediaSpace are private and can only be accessed through your My Media page or if it’s been embedded into a Canvas page.
From Media Space you can share a direct link to a video. When you find the video you want to share, select the Share tab (1) if it is available and then copy the Link to Media Page (2). Anyone with that link will then be able to use it to access this video.
When uploading or editing media via kaltura.uts.edu.au, there are options to change the publishing status from:
Selecting ‘Published’ brings up the option to ‘Publish in Channel’. You can select one or more channels to publish the media and then click Save to apply changes.
Channels are user-curated collections of media in Kaltura MediaSpace. They are a useful way to aggregate and organise videos of the same topic or theme, and sharing the collection to others.
At UTS, when you publish a channel, there are five different types of privacy setting: Open, Restricted, Private, Shared Repository and Public Restricted.
To access all public Channels from UTS, click on “Channels” in the top menu or head to kaltura.uts.edu.au/channels. You can access all the Channels you’ve created by clicking on your name on the top right corner and select ‘My Channels’ from the User drop-down menu.
Click on the “+ Create Channel” button to create a new channel. Once you’ve created a new channel, you need to configure some settings. You can come back and change the settings for your channel at any time.
You can then enter the Channel name (1), description (2) and any relevant tags (3). If you’re creating a channel for your subject ensure you name the channel with your Subject ID and Subject Name. In the description field, you can include relevant information about the channel, e.g. the purpose of the channel, how often new videos are added.
Under ‘Privacy’ (4) there are five settings:
All logged in users can view and contribute content (contribution is not allowed for viewer-role users).
An Open channel will be viewable at https://kaltura.uts.edu.au/channels and anyone can add a video to the channel. It’s important to enable moderation of content when using this level of privacy setting.
All logged in user can view content and only channel members can contribute content.
A Restricted channel will be viewable at https://kaltura.uts.edu.au/channels but only people who have been added as members to a channel can contribute videos.
Only channel members can view and contribute content.
Use this level of privacy if you only want certain people to be able to view the videos in this channel. You can also control who can contribute.
Only channel members can view and contribute content; Content may be published to other channels according to publishing entitlements.
Use this level of privacy if you only want certain people to be able to view the videos in this channel. You can also control who can contribute. Use this level of privacy if you want the videos added to this channel to be available for you to share in other channels.
Anyone can view content (including anonymous not logged-in users). Only channel members can contribute content according to their publishing entitlements.
Use this level of privacy, if you want future UTS staff or students to access certain media without the need to login. This also allows the demonstration of media across institutions, to industry partners and for marketing purposes.
Finally, under Options (5) you can determine the settings for moderation, comments and subscription. You should definitely enable Moderation if you want the channel to be ‘Open’ and we recommend you enable it if you will have multiple contributors.
To add media content to your channels, select your channel then select ‘Add to channel’.
On the next page, you have a choice to add new media via and upload etc. or select an item from My media which you’ve previously uploaded. Once that is done, simply select ‘Publish’ to make it available in the channel.
Members of your channel may also be allowed to add media, but it will need to be moderated by the channel manager before it is published.
To add members to channels, go to the channel page and click on the ‘Edit’ icon on the top right corner. Click on the ‘Users’ tab, then click on the ‘+ Add Users’ button.
Search for the user’s name, email or staff ID number, and add the user to the channel. If you are unable to find the user through the search, they may need to log into kaltura.uts.edu.au to ‘activate’ their account and have their name appear in the system.
By default, media uploaded to a channel are sorted by the most recently uploaded media at the top of the listing. Playlists can organise your media into sections or it can be used to highlight specific media items.
To create a playlist in Channels, go to kaltura.uts.edu.au, click on your name on the top right corner and select ‘My Channels’. Edit the channel, click on the ‘Playlists’ tab, and click on ‘Create Channel Playlist’ to create a new playlist for that channel. This will take you to a page to add items from your My Media to add to your playlist. Once a video has been added to a playlist, going to the Channel will now show the playlists as the ‘front page’.
You can also create your own private playlists to save any videos you have access to into a collection. To access this, click on your name on the top right corner and select ‘My Playlists’. Click on ‘Create Playlist’ to create a new playlist. This will take you to a page to add items from your My Media to add to your playlist.
By default, users will have a ‘Watch Later’ playlist to collect content to watch at a later time. This playlist cannot be deleted or published and media can only be added to it directly via the media content page.
Once your playlist has been created, select the playlist and choose ‘Save and Embed’ from the available icons. A pop-up window with options on how to display your embedded playlist will appear. You can choose a vertical or horizontal display for the player. Click on ‘Copy Embed’ to copy the iframe code and paste it into the HTML editor in any Canvas page with the Rich Content Editor to embed the playlist.
You can also click on ‘Copy’ to copy and share the link or ‘Email’ to email the playlist to those with a UTS account.
Once your vertical player playlist is embedded on a Canvas page it will display the video currently playing followed by a list of all the videos in the playlist. A horizontal player playlist embedded in Canvas is similar to the vertical one except the currently playing video sits adjacent to the list of videos.
