This page explains the benefits of the shared repository in Kaltura. Learn how to publish videos from My Media in Canvas to the shared repository (or a media gallery), and embed videos form the shared repository into a Canvas page.
The Shared Repository is a bank of videos in Kaltura that you can access from your Canvas subject. Media in the Shared Repository is visible to everyone with a UTS login so take care when publishing your videos to that space. It provides a faster way for you to share media with colleagues, rather than adding them individually as media collaborators. It’s also a convenient way to distribute and showcase your work within Canvas.
When uploading or editing media from My Media in your Canvas subject, there are options to change the publishing status from Private and Published:
Selecting ‘Published’ gives you the option to publish the media to the Shared Repository or the Media Gallery of the subjects listed.
If you are enrolled in many subjects, some subjects may not appear in the list of options. In this case, it is best to go directly to the Media Gallery of that subject, then manually add and publish the video there.
After publishing to a the Shared Repository or gallery, go back to My Media to see the publishing status of the media under its title:
A video published to the Shared Repository will now be searchable by any staff member at UTS.
When you go to Embed Kaltura Media (1) on a Canvas page, select the ‘Shared Repository’ tab (2) to see a list of the latest videos uploaded to that space. You can also use the search bar to look for a particular video or topic.
When reusing a colleagues video, be sure to offer correct citation and acknowledgement of the video. Details of how the creator would like to be acknowledged may be in the description of the video beneath the title. Otherwise, you can see the creator details and the creation date adjacent to the video. Copy this information and paste it onto the page with the video in Canvas.
