Find out what this collection covers, and how you can quickly find the right resource for your captioning scenario.
The process for using captions is similar across a range of UTS-supported platforms, but there are slight differences. To quickly find out how you will need to use captions for your situation, focus on the resource in this collection written specifically for the platform you will be using in your class and the type of captions you need.
Captions are pieces of text that appear on a screen to communicate what is being said or heard. Their purpose is to convey audio content visually as text for people who experience hearing loss. They are played in time with multimedia content. They are critical for people with hearing loss but can improve the learning for all of your students.
Professional captions are provided by a third-party service where a human provides the captions to deliver high levels of accuracy. This is used for subjects with students who have captioning as an access requirement.
Professional captions are available for live classes and pre-recorded content.
Automated or machine-generated captions are automatically generated by artificial intelligence (AI). These are free and are available to everyone for live classes through Zoom and Microsoft Teams and for pre-recorded content through Kaltura. They can have lower accuracy levels, so we encourage academics to review captions and correct them to make them more accurate. These can benefit all students.
For an inclusive and accessible learning environment it is crucial to provide captions for all your classes and pre-recorded content in your subject. Note that students with hearing loss might not always be registered with the Accessibility Service.
