Using Microsoft Teams for teaching Set up a Microsoft Teams site for teaching

If you have identified that MS Teams is right for your needs, you can use the Microsoft Teams Classes function in Canvas to create a new site with all your students enrolled.

Important!

This new process for provisioning MS Teams sites for teaching starts from July 25 2022

Creating a new Microsoft Teams site

Following this process will assist you to:

Create a MS Teams site from within Canvas
Students will be automatically added and updated according to enrolment status
Canvas and Teams sites will be consistently named
Students can access Teams directly from Canvas
LX.lab assistance is only required if you need private channels to be set up

Important!

If you create an MS Teams site manually without using the instructions below it will not be possible to link the Teams site to your subject’s Canvas site.

This will prevent the student enrollments from being updated.

How to set up a new MS Teams site from Canvas

Enable Microsoft Sync in Settings

Go to your Canvas Subject site
Select ‘Settings’ from the subject menu
Select the ‘Integrations’ tab
Enable ‘Microsoft Sync’

Important!

To create a new MS Teams site from Canvas, your subject needs to be Published.

Enable Microsoft teams in the subject menu

Select the ‘Navigation’ tab
Enable ‘Microsoft Teams classes’ by dragging the item up from the hidden section to the visible course navigation section
Select ‘Save’
