Inspired by current rising interests and concerns on generative AI, this panel consists of leading AI researchers at the UTS AAII and will broadly touch on topics from ChatGPT to large language models (LLMs), as well as responsible AI’s theoretical foundations to practical applications.

Panellists

Distinguished Professor Jie Lu
Distinguished Professor Jie Lu AO is an internationally renowned scientist in computational intelligence, who has made fundamental and influential contributions, particularly in fuzzy transfer learning, concept drift, data-driven decision support systems, and recommender systems.

Distinguished Professor CT Lin
Chin-Teng Lin’s research focuses on machine-intelligent systems, including algorithm development and system design. He has published over 400 journal papers (H-Index 88 based on Google Scholar) and is the co-author of Neural Fuzzy Systems (Prentice-Hall) and author of Neural Fuzzy Control Systems with Structure and Parameter Learning (World Scientific).

Professor Paul Kennedy
Professor Paul Kennedy is Head of the School of Computer Science, Director of the Biomedical Data Science Laboratory in the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute and co-director of the UTS Ontario Tech JRC in AI for Health and Wellness.

Professor Ling Chen
Ling Chen is a Professor at the Australian Artificial Intelligence Institute, University of Technology Sydney. She received PhD from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research area is machine learning and data mining. Her recent research focuses on reinforcement learning in text-based interactive systems, anomaly detection from complex structured data, and hashing and representation learning for various types of data.

A/Professor Guodong Long
Guodong Long’s research focuses on using federated learning to develop a trustworthy AI with privacy-preserving and personalised intelligence, and also developing new on-device intelligence to cooperate with pre-trained foundation models at the server, e.g., large language models.

A/Professor Nabin Sharma
Dr. Nabin Sharma is an Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Intelligent Drone Lab, in the School of Computer Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He is also the Course Director for the Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence and Master of Artificial Intelligence.

Dr Yi Zhang (Moderator)

This session is part of the AI x L&T event series (31 July – 4 August)

Generative AI (GAI) has recently become more widely available and is impacting higher education, raising questions about the future of learning. Within UTS, conversations about GAI cover assessment, integrity, its role as a learning tool or administrative aid, and how humans’ roles will change in the workplace. To address these discussions and provide support, AI x L&T aims to create a visible forum for connecting individuals with similar ideas and challenges, reducing anxiety and facilitating informed action.
