Chat is a real-time messaging tool in Canvas you can use to communicate with your students.
Any user in the Canvas course can view and participate in a chat, but they must be actively viewing the chat to appear in the chat user list. Note that if there are a lot of students using Chat at the same time, it may be a little slow.
The following tutorial video (2:18) shows you how to access and use Chat in your Canvas course:
When you open the Chat page, you immediately join the chat.
The Chat discussion appears in the content window – see [1] in the image below. Click the New message alerts button [2] to receive sound alerts for new chat messages. Once enabled, you will hear the sound alerts if Chat is open in a background tab or window in your browser.
