It is possible to save a local copy of videos you’ve uploaded to Kaltura (whether you uploaded a file or created a Capture video.) Downloading is a two-step process: turning on file downloading from the Media Edit page, then downloading from the Media Information page.
Download permission is handled on a per-video basis. For each video you want to download, you will have to enable video downloads, and then publish the video to the Media Gallery.
To enable downloads, find your video in ‘My Media’ and click on ‘Edit’ (the pencil icon):
If this is your first time accessing ‘My Media’ or you can’t find it, see the instructions on the Canvas [guide]. These include information on setup and access. You can also access it from the university’s enterprise Kaltura site kaltura.uts.edu.au.
From the Edit screen, click on the ‘Downloads’ tab, select ‘Source’, and click ‘Save’:
Your video is now ready for download (click on ‘Go To Media’ for a shortcut that skips the first few steps below.)
This procedure enables the video to be downloaded by all people with access to it via a subject site’s Media Gallery in Canvas and Kaltura Media Space. However, it does not affect embedded videos.
We recommend keeping it disabled unless the purpose is to allow students to download the video. This has been identified as desirable when students do not count with a fast enough internet connection.
To save a local copy of a video that you’ve enabled downloads, navigate to My Media and then click on the video you want (either the thumbnail or the title):
From the Media Information screen, click on ‘Download’:
The Download menu will appear. Selecting the ‘Download’ icon will prompt you to save the original file:
Saving will follow the same process as any file you download from a web browser.
If you’re saving a Kaltura Capture with two inputs (eg. screen and webcam), you’ll download them as two separate video files.
