You can use quizzes in Canvas to check students’ understanding of a topic, automatically mark and record results, and create surveys to gather opinions or information from students.
Quizzes can be created and managed from the Quizzes Index Page. To access the Quizzes Index Page, click on the Quizzes link from the Course Navigation menu.
The Quizzes Index page has global settings at the top of the page [1], followed by the grouped Quiz types [2]. Individual quizzes are nested within each Quiz type [3].
For more detail on this, take a look at how to use the Quizzes Index Page in Canvas.
There are four types of quizzes you can create in Canvas – graded quizzes, practice quizzes, graded surveys, and ungraded surveys.
Graded quiz | When you create a graded quiz, Canvas automatically creates a column in the Gradebook. If you have used question types which can be automatically marked in your graded quiz, results can be immediately be recorded in the Gradebook. Quiz results for graded quizzes can be viewed in SpeedGrader or from the quiz results page. |
Practice quiz | Practice quizzes can be used to help students see how well they have understood topics in your subject. Though students will receive the number of points they have earned in a practice quiz, the results are not recorded in the Gradebook. Like graded quizzes, you can view the quiz results for practice quizzes. |
Graded survey | You can give students marks for completing a survey with a graded survey (a survey does not have right or wrong answers). A graded survey can be anonymous. Results from a graded survey can be viewed from the quiz details page. |
Ungraded survey | An ungraded survey, which can be anonymous, allows you to get opinions or other information from your students, but students do not receive marks for their responses. Results from an ungraded survey can be viewed from the quiz details page. |

When setting up your quiz questions, note that questions are not automatically numbered. We recommend adding a custom name in the question text field to help you identify your questions more easily (see [1] in the screenshot below).
Regardless of the question name, students always see quiz questions in numerical order (i.e. Question 1, Question 2).
Finally, you can choose from different options for quiz settings to suit your needs. These include:
