A guide to managing and editing media within Kaltura, including adding collaborators and downloading your own videos.
Navigate to your Canvas site, find and select ‘My Media’. Locate and select the pencil icon on the top right section of the screen.
This will take you into video’s settings page where you will be able to manage and edit the video’s setting starting with ‘Details’:
‘Collaboration’ allows you to share certain editing or viewing permissions with other teachers and collaborators.
To change the owner of the video, select ‘Change media owner’ and a prompt box will appear – you will simply need to input the new owner’s SID into the empty field, this will then transfer the media ownership to the new owner.
‘Add a Collaborator’ will allow others to view a private video or receive permission to edit the video’s information and content. To add a collaborator to the video, select ‘Add a Collaborator’ and a prompt box will appear – you will simply need to input the collaborators SID into the empty field, then select one of the following 3 options:
Co-Editors – can edit the entry’s details and metadata, trim media, replace media, edit captions, edit chapters, and edit slides. Co-editors cannot delete media or add new co-editors and co-publishers. Co-editors can see the analytics page for the media they co-edit.
Co-Publishers – can publish media to their entitled Categories or Channels. This option must be enabled by your KMS administrator for this tab to display. Group support may be enabled for the Media Collaboration features. When enabled, you can select groups that may be assigned as co-editors/publishers for an entry.
Co-Viewers – are only able to view media and do not have editing or publishing permissions. They are allowed to view unlisted entries.

‘Thumbnails’ will allow you to customise the beginning display thumbnail of the video. You can choose to ‘Upload Thumbnail‘ from your computer or ‘Capture‘ a thumbnail, which allows you to select a scene within the video player, making the selected scene as the thumbnail. ‘Auto-Generate‘ randomly selects different times within the video as recommendations for a thumbnail.
‘Downloads’ enables the ability to save a local copy of your video to your computer. Detailed instructions are available from Downloading Your Own Videos From Kaltura [guide].
The ‘Timeline’ tab provides you with the option to embed slides within the video and to allocate the slides anywhere within the video. Select the ‘page’ icon on the left of the screen, where you will be provided with the following 2 options:
You can allocate the slides anywhere within the video by simply selecting the slide and drag across the timeline.
The’ Video Editor’ allows users to edit quizzes, clip or trim media. You must be the owner or co-editor of the media to use Kaltura Video Editing Tools. When you have finished your changes, select ‘Save’ at the top right of the screen.
This 3-minute video demonstrates how to chop and splice, trim or clip media by using the Kaltura Editor.
