Extra time and extensions: reasonable adjustments

Extra time and extensions may be requested by a student registered with Accessibility Services if their ongoing health condition/disability impacts on their ability to complete assessments during the specified time frame. 

For example, a student might need extra time and/or an extension during exacerbations of their condition and managing unpredictable health impacts, such as fatigue or other symptoms.  

Extra time gives the student a longer amount of time to complete each attempt at a quiz. Apply extra time by using the Moderate Quiz feature: 

• Navigate to the quiz, using the Course Navigation menu.
• Select Moderate This Quiz .

• Filter the results by inputting the student’s name in the Search People Field.
• Select the Edit button (pencil icon) next to the student’s name – this will open a Student Extension menu.

• Add the additional attempts in the Extra Attempts field. 
• Add the extra time in the Extra time on every attempt field.
• Select save.

Extensions for Assignments and Quizzes can be applied in Canvas by assigning different due dates and availability windows using the Assign to feature. 

By default, Canvas will assign your assignment to everyone in your course with the same due dates and availability windows. To assign a different due date to an individual student: 

• Navigate to Quizzes or Assignments, using the Course Navigation menu.
• Select the relevant Quiz or Assignment.
• Select Edit to change the settings.
• Navigate to the Assign options.
• Select the + Add button.

• Input the name of the student in the Assign to field (you can search for students by first or last name).
• Select the name of the student.
• Edit the Due date using the calendar (this is the date that quiz attempts need to be submitted and assignments are marked as late).
• Edit the Available from and Until dates using the calendar or inputting directly into the field (these are the dates when the quiz or assignment are available for the student). 
• Select the Save & Publish button if you are ready to publish your assignment or select the Save button to create a draft.

When an individual student or students are added to an assignment, the Everyone assignment changes to Everyone Else, which assigns the remaining course students to the corresponding due and availability dates. 

Assigning multiple dates for different students

To add another student with a different due date and availability date, select the Add button and follow the same steps.
