The digital learning ecosystem at UTS

There are a number of learning and teaching platforms used at UTS for different purposes. These are some of the main platforms that we encourage you to become familiar with, but bear in mind that different subjects may include other platforms, including those not supported at UTS. Your subject coordinator should provide further information on any subject-specific platforms that you will need to become familiar with.  

This resource focuses on platforms used for teaching – it does not include UTS platforms used for administrative purposes such as AscenderPay or Neo. Check StaffConnect for instructions on how to use other non-teaching platforms. 

As a tutor, the main learning technologies that you will be using at UTS, would likely be these:   

• Canvas, UTS’s official Learning Management System (LMS).  
• Turnitin, a text matching or originality checking software for text-based assignments.
• Zoom or Microsoft Teams, to facilitate online classes.   

Depending on the requirements of your subject(s), you may also use:  

• Kaltura, UTS’s official media repository platform, to store and manage pre-recorded video or audio content.   
• Mentimeter, UTS’s official polling tool.   
• Qwickly, a tool for taking attendance.
• Reading Lists, to provide access to required readings from a Canvas site. 
• REVIEW, a rubric-based marking and feedback tool.   
• Sparkplus, a self-and-peer assessment tool.   

There will likely be a few technologies in use for your subject, some of which may not be supported by the UTS.  It’s a good idea to ask your subject coordinator which technologies will be in use in the subject, so you are aware of what you may need to learn about.

In addition to learning and teaching technologies, you may also hear references to the following learning and teaching systems.   

• Curriculum and Student System (CASS), which tracks information on student enrolments, course (or program) structure, teaching sessions.   
• Curriculum Information System (CIS), which contains information about subjects (all the items that are in a subject outline).
• myTimetable (sometimes known as MSA+ or Allocate+), which is UTS’s timetabling system and where you access your class list.
