Addressing wastage challenges, experimental textile designer Wajiha Pervez integrates AI tools like MidJourney, forging a creative partnership that redefines industry boundaries. Through AI-generated ideas, she envisions an inclusive, sustainable future while navigating ethical and labour concerns
Wajiha Pervez is an experimental textile designer, artist, PhD student, curator, and academic, that is passionate about transforming the fashion industry through collaborating with visual generative AI (vGenAI).
Wajiha is concerned with the wastage generated by traditional fashion design practices, particularly in sampling and sizing. This challenge prompted her to explore innovative ways to minimise waste while maintaining the authenticity and creativity inherent in fashion design.
Wajiha’s goal is to leverage vGenAI technology to mitigate the wasteful aspects of the fashion industry’s design process. She seeks to harness AI’s potential to create a more sustainable and inclusive fashion ecosystem while addressing ethical concerns associated with creative labour. She also believes that vGenAI (and GenAI in general) will make the industry more accessible to people, providing a more competitive playground for small scale producers.
Wajiha’s mission involves integrating vGenAI tools, such as MidJourney, into her creative process. Instead of sampling a variety of costly fabrics, Wajiha wants to co-create and collaborate with vGenAI to aid her creativity and sampling process, pushing the boundaries of the creative and inspiration process.
Wajiha’s exploration of vGenAI tools have yielded promising results. Despite the learning curve to Midjourney’s parameters, the outputs have demonstrated the potential in co-creating design with vGenAI. She acknowledges the importance of ‘prompt engineering’, that the product is only as good as the input and prior learning of the model. Using vGenAI has resulted in a new way of thinking about the creative process, while making it more efficient in time and resource.
