You can customise the start and end dates for a Canvas subject site. The default session dates for the availability of a Canvas subject site are controlled by information in CASS. However, for minor session subjects, such as May and October subjects, these predefined dates do not always match up with the practical requirements.
For example, you may need an extended end date for the submission of and feedback on assignments. You may also need to make the subject available early for students to complete an assignment before the first class.
After the end date, the site will enter ‘read-only’ mode for anyone enrolled in the site (including teaching staff). The subject won’t be visible on the dashboard but you can still access the course by going to the Courses tab and clicking on ‘All Courses’. This will show all of your current and past enrolments, including the read-only sites.
If your site enters ‘read-only’ mode and you wish to re-open your subject and extend the availability dates, you will need to lodge a ticket to ITD for support.
If you need to customise these dates, it is important to do so before the end of the default term dates predefined in CASS. Otherwise you will require assistance from IT to change them.
Finally, at the end of the page click the button “Update course details”.
Students will not be able to see the site on their list of Canvas Subjects before the ‘Starts’ date, and you will not be able to set an assignment due date after the ‘Ends’ date and time.
