People displays information about users in a Canvas course. You’ll find a link to the People page in your Course Navigation Menu.
The following tutorial video (3:52 min) shows you how to add and view users via People.
View the transcript for this video tutorial.
The People page displays all information about the users in your Canvas Course. The page is designed with global settings at the top of the page [see [1] in screenshot below] followed by the generated user data [see [2] in screenshot below].
Use the People page in a Canvas course site
To search for a specific user, type the user’s name in the search field [see [1] in the screenshot above].
To filter by role (e.g. student), select the Roles drop-down menu [see [2] in the screenshot above]. The filter will also display the number of users in each type of role.
You can also add a user to the course [see [3] in the screenshot above], by clicking the +People button.
If a student has withdrawn from a subject, you can find their assessment results in Canvas with these steps:
Please keep in mind that the Student Centre does not have access to a subject in Canvas to view a withdrawn student’s assessment results. More information is available here:
How do I use the People page in a course as an instructor?
If you need to re activate the account of an ‘inactive’ student in your subject you can do it following these steps:
Role | Function |
Course Coordinator | This role is allocated to Subject Coordinators or to other relevant faculty support staff. This role gives staff full access to Canvas to create, edit and delete content and edit the Gradebook. Subject Coordinators are the only ones who can add other staff to the Canvas site. |
Teacher | This role gives staff full access to Canvas to create, edit and delete content and edit the Gradebook. This role can be allocated to co-teachers for the subject or to dedicated site coordinators. |
Course Designer | Staff in this role cannot edit the Gradebook. However, they have full access to create, edit and delete content. Site builders who will not be teaching can be allocated to this role e.g. UTS Library liaison for your subject. |
Teaching Assistant (TA) | This is for staff who are only moderating, creating and editing discussion forums in Canvas, and marking student submissions in the Gradebook. Staff given this role are not able to add or modify anything else on the site. Tutors or markers who are not required to build content can be given this role. |
Observer | This role is for staff who need read-only access to the site. They cannot add or edit content, or see the Gradebook. Give this role to staff who are only reviewing and auditing the site. |
Have a look at the Canvas guides to learn you can make the most of People in your Canvas course site:
