It’s important to make sure that both staff and students in Canvas are granted the correct level of access. This resource covers UTS policy on Canvas roles for all users.
UTS policy for Canvas roles
Staff should not be granted an application role which gives them more access than necessary for their UTS staff role.
Students should not be given elevated access which may give them or their cohort advantage over other students by allowing access to assessments, grades, hidden content.
There are three particular policy sections that address this area:
Staff and Students must comply with the Provision and Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources Policy
4.3 Users will be provided access to UTS IT resources for the purposes of work, study and, where appropriate, incidental personal use, noting that:
- provision and access will reflect the level, budget, work and access requirements of the user

Staff must comply with the Code of Conduct
Staff and affiliates must:
- maintain the confidentiality, integrity and security of university information during and at the end of their work, duties or functions at UTS

Staff must comply with Academic Integrity Policy
Staff giving elevated access to students are putting students at risk of breaching Academic Integrity Policy.
4.5 UTS community members must not, directly or indirectly:
- engage in any form of cheating, academic fraud or plagiarism
- make unauthorised use of facilities or equipment
4.13 Academic integrity breaches by students are managed as an act of student misconduct in line with
Section 16 — Student misconduct and appeals
- accessing unauthorised material for a quiz, examination or any other form of assessment.
