In support of gender diversity and inclusive practices at UTS, a Canvas feature enables students and staff to identify their preferred pronouns. This resource shows you how to use the pronouns feature.
Selecting your pronouns in Canvas is optional. Your selected pronouns will be shown beside your name when posting in a public space, such as a discussion forum. Other staff and students will be able to view your pronouns on your profile and in public spaces. Users with access to the people tool will also be able to view your pronouns. You can review and update your pronouns in Canvas at any time via Settings.
Pronouns and inclusive practice
Students and staff can now select their pronouns via Settings in Canvas. This is an opt-in profile setting only.
The initiative aims to facilitate effective communication between staff and students where individuals prefer their identity to be known. There are three options:
- She/Her
- He/Him
- They/Them
How to add your pronouns in Canvas
Edit your pronouns via your Settings in just five easy steps:
1. Click on Account on the left-hand navigation.
2. In the pop-up menu, click on Settings.
3. Click on Edit Settings on the right-hand side.
4. Choose your pronouns.
5. Save by clicking Update settings.
Where pronouns are displayed
All Canvas users may choose to update or remove their Pronoun selection at any time. When referencing other students and staff, please make sure to check whether this information has been made publicly available by the user. You can check someone’s pronoun selection via any of the avenues below:
- On a user’s profile
- After a user’s name if they post in a public space e.g. a discussion board
- Academics/Subject coordinators always have access to the People page.
- Students only have access to the People page in Subjects where it is made available.
