Although Canvas Outcomes can be created within an individual subject site, this is not recommended for the recording of CILOs or PLOs as it reduces the options for data reporting and analysis. Outcomes designed to record CILOs and PLOs should instead be created in Canvas at Faculty sub-account level.
Only staff with the appropriate level of access will be able to create Outcomes in a Faculty sub-account. Faculty administrators and learning and teaching team members who need access to Outcomes at sub-account level should submit an IT Service Request via ServiceConnect.
Create an Outcomes Group
- Click on ‘Admin’ in the Canvas global navigation menu. Then, select the Faculty sub-account that you have administrative access to.
- Click on ‘Outcomes’ in the sub-account navigation menu.
- In the window that appears, click on ‘+ Group’ to create a folder to hold the required CILOs or PLOs.
- Enter the required name of the ‘Outcomes Group’ folder which will contain your CILOs or PLOs (1). Click ‘Save’ (2).
Adding CILOs or PLOs as Outcomes

Outcomes can be imported into Canvas via a csv. However, the required csv format is quite complex. At this time, the LX.lab recommends adding Outcomes directly, as described in this resource.
- Once the ‘Outcomes Group’ folder has been created, you can add individual CILOs or PLOs by clicking on the ‘+ Outcome’ button.
- Enter the name of your CILO or PLO in the ‘Name this outcome’ box (1). You can also enter a ‘friendly name’, which is what students will see if you decide to make the Learning Mastery Gradebook available to them. Also enter a description of the CILO or PLO in the rich content editor (2) to ensure students understand the UTS learning outcome that is being assured in their assessment.
Save time by copying and pasting the details of the CILO or PLO from your Faculty’s course documentation.
- To modify the criterion and rating scale, click on the edit button (the pencil icon) (1). This will enable you to change the criterion name and associated points.
In the ‘Mastery at’ box (2), you can set the score at which students are recorded as having adequately demonstrated the requirements of the CILO or PLO. The default scores should be suitable for most Faculties as they are for reporting purposes only and will not be counted in students assignment marks.
- The ‘Calculation Method’ dropdown menu allows you to select how students’ achievement of CILOs or PLOs will be recorded. The options are Decaying Average, n Number of Times, Most Recent Score and Highest Score. This Canvas Community resource describes these calculation methods in detail.
- Click ‘Save’ to finalise the Outcome’s settings.
