Canvas Outcomes can help UTS Subject Coordinators and tutors to more easily record student achievement of Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) or Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs). They can also help Faculty administrators, and learning and teaching teams, to collect, analyse and report assurance of learning data. Following the initial set-up, using Canvas Outcomes has the potential to reduce the time needed for these tasks.
Outcomes can be aligned with Canvas assignment rubrics to track student learning. When a student’s work is marked using a rubric, their achievement of an aligned UTS learning outcome can be recorded at the same time.
Outcomes can also be attached to Canvas quizzes via a Question Bank. In this situation, a certain score on a quiz would represent achievement of a UTS learning outcome.
Canvas Outcomes can be displayed in the Mastery Learning Gradebook, which allows instructors and students to visually track student achievement of UTS learning outcomes.
Although Canvas Outcomes can be created directly in a subject site, at UTS, Outcomes are usually created at Faculty sub-account level and then imported into a subject’s Canvas site. They can then be aligned with assignment rubrics and/or quiz question banks to facilitate the tracking of student achievement and be used for the reporting of assurance-of-learning.
It is possible to export Canvas Outcomes data from both an individual subject site and from an associated Faculty sub-account.
This video (5:04 mins) provides an overview of Canvas Outcomes for instructors, focusing on how to create, search for, and manage outcomes at the subject level, and how to use Outcomes to track student learning.
