Rovai (2001) suggests there are two types of interaction that we need to foster in class to build community, particularly when working online. These are task-focused interactions for the goal of learning, and relationship-focused interactions that facilitate social wellbeing and friendships. The key to effective learning environments is having a combination of both, and sometimes, we can achieve both outcomes with one activity.

Over the coming weeks, beginning on Tuesday, April 13, we are offering a series of fortnightly mini-workshops, just half an hour on a Tuesday morning, where you can experience a range of community-building activities that you can use with your students in class, and which can be adapted for face to face or online contexts.

This series has emerged out of our first FFYE Forum this year on Building belonging and engagement: Cultivating a compassionate university, where Maha Bali shared her open-ed community building resource, and together we explored one activity that you can use with students to help them connect and reflect in class (Spiral Journal). The trouble with a lot of these resources is that we are often not sure how to pick them up and make them work for our context. In this workshop series, you will have the opportunity to experience and reflect on these activities as a participant with your colleagues to explore how you might adapt them to your teaching context.

To register for this series, please register below and we will send you a calendar invitation to the series – you can then choose whether to come to one or all of the workshops depending on your availability.

We hope to see you there.
