The Teaching and Curriculum Team, IML, warmly invite you to join us for the upcoming FFYE Forum to kick off our second Hot Topic for the year focusing on Teamwork and Student Agency.  Over the coming weeks, we will invite you to join us in a range of conversations about how we foster student participation and engagement in teamwork, why we need to introduce it in first year, and why we need to think about relational agency as an explicit component of how we invite students to engage in collaborative learning.

In this Forum, we begin the conversation by introducing the concept of relational agency and highlight its importance in building cohesive and inclusive relationships in teamwork activities. The Forum will introduce evidence-based practice and research findings, a case example from an FFYE Grant Project in FEIT, and there will be extensive opportunities for attendees to share their own practice and reflect on the ideas during the forum.

Academics, professional staff engaged in student transition and students are invited to register. For those of you who are new to the FFYE community, the Forums provide a space for academics, student support staff and students to network, share and engage in practices that support students as they transition through their degrees.

Presenters

Presenters include Franziska Trede, and a 2020 FFYE Grant Team from FEIT – Tania Machet, Jeremy Lindeck , Eva Cheng and Scott Daniel – who will share their insights from their project: Transition in group work practices through the development of relational agency. The team will describe the findings from their study that include a five-tiered framework for thinking about students’ capacity for relational agency, and the three factors which support their capacity development:

  • Feeling safe within the team
  • Taking a strengths-based approach to task distribution and teamwork
  • Facilitating clear communication regardless of the method of delivery

We hope to see you at our second exciting event of the year.
