What are Hot Topics?

Hot Topics are curriculum and teaching themes that have emerged in UTS from student learning experiences, student feedback surveys (SFS), consultations and other strategic projects. They are a series of professional development and engagement opportunities to enhance courses and provide longer-term support through community building and sustained critical dialogues.

Hot Topic Theme: Student Agency and Teamwork

We are happy to introduce a selection of students who will create and deliver a role play and discussion in the form of Forum Theatre. Forum Theatre is possibly the most widely-used form of socially-engaged theatre both locally and internationally. The style enables those who are faced with a problem to play out different strategies for solving it so that role play becomes a rehearsal for reality. It is often used by socially disempowered groups and has been used as a style of participatory policy-making in Brazil, where it began.

This engaging forum will help educators identify opportunities and develop strategies for enabling more inclusive and agentic student teamwork within their own contexts. You will gain insight into student experiences and work through ways to support students in solving issues in group assessments. This is an opportunity to expand practice and connect with ourselves, one another and our students.

This event is facilitated by the Institute for Interactive Media and Learning (IML), Teaching and Curriculum (TAC) Team.

Aurora Murphy is a Lecturer, Academic Language and Learning Group in IML and Forum theatre aficionado.

Dimity Wehr is a Senior HEA curriculum developer IML TACT team. Curriculum design advice and development and event facilitation in the blended learning environment.
