There are two methods to copy and share content in Canvas. The new Direct Share function makes it easy to share examples with colleagues and copy items to your other courses. If you need to copy a large amount of material, question banks, or files, use the Course Import tool.
The Direct Share feature in Canvas means you can share and copy assignments, announcements, quizzes, discussions, pages and modules quickly and easily. You can send content directly to another user in Canvas, or copy content into your Canvas courses. You will find the option to share or copy in the three dot menu for individual content items and modules:
To copy content from one Canvas course to another, you need to be enrolled as a user in both sites. The Copy To… function lets you specify exactly where you would like to place the content.
When you send content to another user, they will receive a notification which appears on their user account icon. A new section titled Shared Content is where all items appear. The recipient can then decide to preview the content, and import it.
If you copy the same content to your subject more than once it will overwrite changes you made to that content. Therefore, if you need multiple instances of a template, it is best to duplicate it in your subject rather than copying it to your subject multiple times.
For example, a subject coordinator copies the ‘Guest speaker’ page template to their subject from their Faculty Templates site. They begin editing the template with their own content. Later they realise they want to use the ‘Guest speaker’ template again. They copy the template again, but all the updates from the first copy are overwritten.
Although this can be undone by viewing the revision history and restoring a previous version of the page (How do I view the history of a page in a course? – Canvas Community), it’s best to duplicate copies of a template in your subject.
The Course Import Tool is best used for copying large amounts of content (i.e., several modules), question banks, files, etc. As with the Copy To… option in Direct Share, you’ll need to have access to both Canvas courses to successfully import content. The following tutorial video (2:05 mins) shows you how to import content.
