Student view in Canvas

Use the Student View to view your subject site from the student’s perspective. You can also submit assignments and quizzes using Student View.

You can use Student View to:

• Check that you’ve published all the content you want your students to have access to.
• Preview and test any task you wish your students to complete, for example, a quiz or a discussion forum.
• Preview the SpeedGrader in preparation for marking an assessment task
• Test Marks, which is Canvas’ version of Gradebook.

• Access the home page of your Canvas course
• You can find the button to enable the Student View at the top right corner of your subject pages.

A purple bar appears on the bottom of the screen indicating that you are logged into Student View.

The purple bar will remain at the bottom of the page even when changing between pages in the same course. However, you will need to enable Student View again if you move to a different course.

You can easily reset Test Student data at any time by clicking the Reset Student button on the purple bar.

Resetting the student will clear all activity such as assignment submissions. However, Test Student activity that involves interactions with other students, such as discussion replies, cannot be removed.

To return to the instructor view, click the Leave Student View button.

 The Canvas Test Student view may not correctly display the following:

• Attendance 
• Conferences
• Conversations inbox
• Collaborations
• Differentiated assignments
• External apps
• Groups
• Peer reviews

This also applies to our own external apps such as:

• Subject Outline
• My Media
• Media Gallery
• Turnitin
• Reading list
• Zoom
• ProctorU
• Echo360
• H5P

However, students viewing your Canvas course will be able to see these tools.
