Collecting and analysing data on students’ interactions, engagement and performance can help you make informed decisions to support student learning. The New Analytics tool in Canvas aggregates data from students’ page views and their participation in Canvas subject sites, offering insights into students’ learning experience in the online environment.
New Analytics can be accessed from Course Navigation or from the New Analytics button in the Course Home Page.
The video guide below offers a general overview of the key functionality and how to navigate different areas in the New Analytics tool [6:06 mins].
The Course Grade tab allows you to view the average course grades for all course data using an interactive chart graph or data table. You can also filter analytics results to compare the average course grade with a specific section or student using the chart graph comparison or data table comparison.

The Weekly Online Activity tab allows you to view the average number of page views and participations for a course using an interactive chart graph or a data table. The following activities are counted as participation:
New Analytics allows you to send messages to an individual or a group of students based on grade or participation criteria.
The Students tab displays a table with all students within a specific filter. You can filter the data by adding a section or by individual student.
You can also use this tab to conduct a more detailed analysis of how an individual student is performing and compare it to different individuals or cohorts.
You can view and download reports as CSV files in New Analytics. You can download reports for missing assignments, late assignments, excused assignments, class roster, and course activity.
Reports can be filtered depending on the report type, and can be created using more than one filter.
When running a report for 500+ students, timeouts can be experienced. Canvas is working to improve this issue; in the meantime you can attempt to run reports again until they come through successfully.
