As a response to questions from students on the consistency and perceived fairness of various ‘academic administration’ practices at UTS, an Academic Administration Working Group has recommended some changes to protocol. These have now been shared, approved and implemented in Faculty Board Protocols, so it’s important to be aware of the impacts on your Canvas site as you prepare for Autumn session.
The key changes are…
- Standardising Canvas assessment submission times to a deadline of 11:59PM. This applies to all assessments other than those which need to be completed or performed in a weekly synchronous class, take home exams, or scheduled end of session exams.
- A new button in Canvas to request and automatically approve 72-hour extensions within Canvas for most assessment types.
- Consistent late penalties practice across UTS – there is a late penalty of 5% per day for up to seven calendar days (i.e. a maximum of 35% penalty) with work submitted after 7 calendar days not being marked and given a mark of zero.
If you are a Subject Coordinator, you’ll need to…
- Check that all assessments and quizzes with a due date must have a deadline of 11:59PM with the exception of those assessment types outlined above.
- Review any reference to late penalties and align with the consistent University guidance above. Come and chat to the team to discuss how you can set up a rule in Canvas to automatically calculate late penalties in the grade book.
- Familiarise yourself with the new extension tool in Canvas – a resource will soon be published that will give you guidance on this tool.

Now is the time to check over your Autumn site to ensure that you are happy with the content and that nothing was missed in the early creation of Autumn subjects for 2025.
