The Learner experience lab (LX.lab) is your place at UTS for learning and teaching support, advice and ideas.. You can access one-on-one learning design support, join a community of practice, and pick from a selection of daily workshops and skill-up sessions. Futures is a blogging and events platform where you can read stories, tips and advice written by UTS academic and professional staff, get live chat support from the team at the LX.lab between 10am and 4pm, and book in to attend LX.lab events. The Institute for Interactive Media and Learning (IML) is the academic development unit at UTS. The team of academics in the Teaching and Learning Group at IML are on hand to work with faculties on learning and teaching, curriculum and assessment design. IML also offers learning modules and a graduate certificate for teaching according to the learning.futures model.
Academic Language and Learning
Embedded within IML, the Academic Language and Learning Group works collaboratively with discipline academics. The team works with course and subject teams to develop discipline-specific approaches to teaching academic language and literacies. These approaches can include curriculum development, co-design of subjects and tutorials that focus on language and literacy, guest lectures on academic language and literacy and some team teaching.
UTS Library is more than just a place to find books, although it does offer a particularly exciting spin on this with its state of the art robotic retrieval system. You can chat to a librarian or head online to get support with referencing, literature, searching, subject readings, digital and data literacy. The team also hosts a suite of online training materials for academic staff and students via Lynda.com and HeadsUp. There’s also regular events and workshops for the UTS community on a variety of topics.
Having technical issues? ServiceConnect is the first point of contact for IT Support and Audio Visual Services (AVS). Get in touch with the ITD team for help with access to the systems you need to use for your role. Recently the AVS team have launched their help guide, which will inform you on how to use the AVS in your learning space with a simple search engine available on StaffConnect.
Looking to skill-up? Try your hand at one of our free, bite-sized mini courses at UTS Open, which draws on the extensive UTS postgraduate program and industry connections. The courses take three to five hours of your time, and over the next year more courses will be added.
UTS staff and students can also access a vast online library of Lynda.com courses and instructional videos in technology, and creative and business skills, thanks to the UTS Library. Using your webmail login you can up-skill in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, project management, and much more.
Helping your students
Sometimes it’s students who need to be directed to support services. For students in need of assistance with academic reading and writing, HELPS is the way to go. Higher Education Language and Presentation Support (HELPS) provides non-credited English language and academic literacy support to UTS undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students.
