In trying to keep up with Generative AI, the search for the ideal tool to explore and use has evolved. In 2023, it was all about ChatGPT, and how we could be ethical and effective in our use of this tool. This time last year, we established Copilot as the preferred GenAI at UTS, ensuring that – to make sure your data is secure – you need to log in and use the Protected version.
Think before you use
Before using a GenAI tool, you should always consider:
- the tools already approved for your use at UTS
- what data you will be putting in any Gen AI tool
- what will happen to that data
UTS is developing a safe and sustainable approach to manage the risks associated with all the currently available Generative AI (GenAI) applications. This is part of a broader, risk-based approach to all GenAI use involving UTS information and data and the UTS network and environment.
On Tuesday 4 February, the Australian Government directed Commonwealth entities to prevent the access, use or installation of DeepSeek products, applications and services from all Australian Government systems and devices. We will update you with further advice, particularly on how this may impact on various aspects of learning and teaching. In the interim, we recommend that you do not download or install DeepSeek onto your devices and, in particular, to a UTS-managed device.
Keep on course with Copilot
Eliminating one GenAI tool should not impact on being engaged with and exploring the possibilities of using GenAI in your teaching. Tools such as Copilot can enhance productivity for both students and staff, and we will all need to be across its capabilities with it now being established that banning GenAI across a subject is no longer appropriate or realistic.
Copilot is the core GenAI that meets the university’s data classification standards and is the secure, safe option for us as a university. When requiring students to use GenAI tools, remember to direct them to use UTS’s Copilot environment for security. When in doubt, use Copilot for your professional work, and always using the protected (enterprise) version for better protection of your data.
