On 13th February, subject sites will be published for Autumn 2023. To get you off to a positive start to the upcoming session, we’ve developed a guide that takes you through three key stages. This will ensure you can tick all the boxes for creating a successful and fulfilling learning experience for your students.
🗓️ Before 13th February: get your subject site ready for students
- Use this subject readiness checklist (PDF) to make sure your Canvas site is ready for your students.
- Review your subject site from the student’s viewpoint and make changes (e.g. check due dates, clear content). Use our subject rollover checklist to see what’s copied over and what isn’t.
- Inclusive teaching boosts belonging for all students at UTS. Make sure your site is accessible to everyone when your subject commences.
- Use the Library’s Reading Lists tool to update your readings. Enable and publish the list for student access via Canvas. You can also get help from UTS Library’s guides or reach out directly if needed.
- Record a welcome video to include in your announcement. Book a 30-minute recording session in the LX.lab Media Space or do it from the convenience of your own computer.

🗓️ 13th February: connect, communicate and offer support
- Make students aware of your subject availability by sending them a welcome announcement; this could include your welcome video too. Ensure that your subject is published before hitting ‘send’ or announcements won’t be received by students.
- Having a clear communication strategy and sharing it with students is crucial. Your strategy doesn’t have to be complicated – just specify your communication method and timing, e.g. “I’ll send a weekly Canvas announcement every Monday afternoon.”
- Know where you and your students can go for Canvas support.

🗓️ 20th February: Week 1 and the learning environment
- Get your learning environment ready for your delivery mode. Whether you will be teaching in a hybrid mode, fully online or in a face-to-face format, ensure that you have the tools to help you to teach in the most efficient way possible.
- If you’re looking for quick, easy ideas to help build your class community and to make online learning engaging, we’ve put together a collection of activities for you. Icebreakers, scaffolding and student-generated content —there’s lots to explore and try out.
- Organise your online classes and keep consistent Zoom links for students. Share these details with tutors and ensure they are ready with tips to break the ice.
Finally, from week 1 onwards, continue to consider practices that humanise the learning environment, build community and develop a sense of belonging among your students where they feel included and supported.
