Save the date for Friday 2 August! The annual UTS Work Integrated Learning Symposium returns for another year. This year’s theme is Putting student equity at the centre of quality WIL. Featuring top-tier WIL showcases, WIL work in progress and an interactive student panel, the event promises to be an action-packed day with plenty of things for academic and professional staff to enjoy.

Sport meets work-integrated learning

For the first time, the event will be hosted within the Moore Park precinct. If you’re a sports fan, you would know that Moore Park is the location of 2 of Sydney’s largest sporting venues: Allianz Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground. Amongst these iconic arenas is the UTS Rugby Australia Building, a modern facility boasting impressive research labs and teaching spaces.

The building itself is the home of the UTS School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. Fittingly, our keynote address for the day will be presented by Professor Aaron Coutts, Head of the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation. His research is focused on developing evidence-based methods to optimise the training, health and performance of athletes. In his keynote, he will share the school’s whole-of-course WIL design strategy and explore how it emphasises student equity.

Symposium participants will enjoy an exclusive tour of the building and receive a catered lunch. You might even bump into a Sydney Swans star or the next rugby sensation!

World cafe presentations and insights from across UTS

It’s not just about sport at this symposium. In this event, we will be showcasing examples of work-integrated learning from across the UTS faculties. Speakers will share case studies of WIL being scaffolded through the curriculum from foundational in the first year and developmental in the middle years to professional experiences when students reach the end of their studies. These examples increase all students’ access to WIL engagement throughout their programs. Course and division teams will be on hand to talk with you and share their scaffolded WIL examples, with any feedback being welcomed.

Here’s a sneak peek of 4 presentations that will feature in the showcase:

  • Indigenous Perspectives in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Architecture: ‘Design with Country’
  • Career Compass in FEIT: students share their experiences creating personal portfolios, and using peer and industry engagement to develop their professional skills and career goals.
  • The Sustainability Project Team: sharing ways to embed sustainable practices and SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) into the curriculum
  • Teams from Business and DAB who have been using the UTS WIL Framework’s Typology to identify WIL experiences across the curriculum from first to final years

The event will also include a student panel session featuring a diverse group of students sharing their experiences and reflections on work-integrated learning at UTS. Last year’s student panel session uncovered many WIL gems, and we hope this year’s discussion will evoke many more.
